How to Grow Your Preschool Dance Department

Preschool classes are the front door of most dance schools. Families who start with you at two or three are the ones still dancing at twelve — so a strong preschool department pays off for years.

Here's how to grow yours.

"Preschool Dance, Tuesday 10am" is hard to market. A named, character-led class is easy to talk about and easy to remember. Parents tell each other about "Ballerina Bear" at nursery pick-up. Use the character on your timetable, website, posters and social posts.

Parents judge your school on the first few weeks. If one teacher runs a brilliant class and another improvises, families notice. A shared syllabus means the same quality whoever is teaching, and makes covering classes simple.

Weekday mornings and Saturday mornings work best for preschoolers. Keep classes short and groups small, and decide whether to split ages 2–3 and 4–5 or run mixed classes.

A free or low-cost trial class removes the risk for parents. Make sure that first class is your best: familiar routine, great music and a sticker to take home.

Reward charts, end-of-term open classes and short videos (with permission) let parents see what their child is learning. Visible progress keeps families enrolled.

By four or five, children are ready for more structure. Introduce the vocabulary of your graded classes — first position, pliés, shuffles — so moving up feels natural rather than a leap.
