What 2 year olds can do in a dance class
At two, children are still mastering walking, running and jumping. Many can't yet skip or balance on one foot, and most will copy you rather than remember a sequence. That's fine. The goal at this age is joy, confidence and basic body awareness, not technique.
- Copy simple movements: clapping, stamping, reaching, twirling
- Walk and run on tiptoes, and start to jump with two feet
- Respond to music stopping and starting
- Take turns with support, one child at a time
Tips for teaching toddlers
- Keep each activity short and change things every few minutes
- Use one character or prop to hold attention — a teddy in the middle of the circle works wonders
- Expect some children to watch for the first few weeks; they are still learning
- Invite grown-ups to help shy dancers rather than leaving them on the side
- Repeat the same class shape every week so children know what's coming
How Dancing Dots supports your youngest dancers
Every Dancing Dots syllabus is written for ages 2–5. Activities are simple enough for two year olds to join in, with development notes that let older children in the same class go further. In Ballerina Bear, for example, younger dancers may need a hand jumping over the bear, while three year olds can add a twirl with a wand afterwards.
