How to Structure a Preschool Dance Class (With a Free Class Outline)

Tappy Tiger

Tappy Tiger

A simple, proven structure for preschool dance classes: welcome, warm-up, travelling, skill focus, freeze games, cool down and rewards. With timings and tips.

Preschool dance classes live or die on structure. Two to five year olds can't hold a long sequence in their heads, but they love knowing what comes next. Get the shape of the class right and everything else gets easier.

Here's the structure we use across every Dancing Dots syllabus, and why it works.

1. Welcome and settle

Start sitting in a circle. A welcome song where every child says their name (or passes the class teddy) gives shy dancers a gentle way in and lets you check who's here.

Tip: keep the welcome the same every single week. It becomes the signal that dance class has started.

2. Seated warm-up

Before anyone runs around, warm up sitting down: pointing and flexing feet ("good toes, naughty toes"), reaching up to the stars, stretching arms wide. Children stay in their place, which keeps the room calm.

3. Imagination travelling

Now it's time to move. Butterflies, princesses, animals, superheroes — give children a character and let them travel across the room or around the circle. One child at a time works well for younger groups; the whole class together suits fours and fives.

4. Skill focus

Pick one small skill and practise it through play: jumping over a ribbon "river", galloping, tiptoe walking, a first tap step or a simple hip hop groove. Small, repeated wins build confidence fast.

5. Freeze and listen games

Music-stop games burn energy and quietly teach listening and control. Freeze in a shape, run to say hello to the class character, or find a new space in the room when the music stops.

6. Calm down and goodbye

Finish with a slower track. In Ballerina Bear, children walk around the circle to a lullaby and stroke the bear to sleep before saying goodbye. A calm ending means calm children going back to their grown-ups.

7. Reward

A sticker on a reward chart is a tiny thing that children remember all week — and it shows parents progress.

How long should each part be?

Most schools run preschool classes for 30 to 45 minutes. As a rough guide, keep any single activity to a few minutes and move on before attention drops. It's better to repeat a favourite activity than to stretch one out.

Want the whole thing ready-made?

Every Dancing Dots syllabus follows this structure, with each activity written up, matched to its own music track and demonstrated on video. See the preschool dance lesson plans or explore Ballerina Bear, Hip Hop Hippo and Tappy Tiger.
